Mr. Eta is a distinguished advanced controls & optimization engineer and a modeling & simulation expert with over three decades of experience in the field. He currently serves as a consultant in engineering and artificial intelligence at Marathon Petroleum Corporation, where he is instrumental in developing advanced control systems and LP models for industrial plants and refining processes. Part of his expertise lies in programming and designing advanced control systems that manage hundreds of variables within distributed control systems, optimizing plant efficiency & performance and using various modeling tools including Artificial Intelligence to properly represent processes.
Mr. Eta's career at Marathon Petroleum Corporation began in 2011 when he joined as a senior refinery engineer and was part of the Detroit Heavy Oil Upgrade Project (DHOUP) where he was responsible for the upgrade of major process unit control systems and all the advanced controls solutions that resided on them. In his roles within Marathon Petroleum Corporation, he has implemented many innovative controls and optimization solutions and was responsible for single-handedly developing and implementing what he terms "layered advanced controls" to a cumene unit in a refinery, a unique process not commonly found in other refineries. By 2018, he had developed the distributed control system (DCS) based advanced control strategy for this unit, including using his proprietary software to develop thermodynamic models, significantly improving the refinery unit's efficiency and uptime. Amongst his other notable innovations, one should mention his design and implementation of an advanced controls system that reduced boiler emissions while keeping the combustion oxygen in the required range which improved safety, reliability, performance and cost to operate the boilers. In 2020, he transitioned to the role of senior production planning engineer before becoming a senior refining operations engineer/researcher specializing in modeling and simulation.
Before his tenure at Marathon Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Eta held various significant positions across multiple organizations. From 2010 to 2011, he was a senior consultant at Dow. Prior to that, he served as an engineering consultant and information technology director at Uranium Disposition Services from 2009 to 2010. In 2009, he also held the position of director of engineering at Sriya Innovations Inc. His earlier roles include applications consultant and advanced process control supervisor at Maverick Technologies from 2006 to 2009, senior process control engineer at Praxair Inc. from 2004 to 2006, and advanced control engineer at Pavilion Technologies from 2000 to 2002.
Mr. Eta's career began as an advanced controls engineer with Honeywell Process Solutions (formerly Hi-Spec Solutions) consulting group in the mid-1990s before joining ExxonMobil as a plant-based advanced process controls and applications engineer. Throughout his career, he has been recognized for his leadership and technical acumen. He has tackled and solved several persistent problems with very innovative solutions that encompass a combination of process engineering, process controls, thermodynamics, data modeling and computer programming skills. These skills have been applied to boilers (optimization and emissions reduction), distillation columns in refineries, petro-chemical & specialty chemical plants, polymer facilities as well as fertilizer complexes,
Mr. Eta's educational journey began with a high school diploma from Bilingual Grammar School, Molyko in Cameroon in 1987. After completing coursework at the Engineering Concepts Institute in 1989, he earned a bachelor's degree with honors in chemical engineering in 1993. He then completed a Master of Science in chemical and mechanical engineering with research in enhanced oil recovery techniques at Prairie View A&M University, finishing course work in 1995. He credits his success to the unwavering support of his family and the guidance of influential instructors like Mr. Jorge Gabitto at Prairie View A&M University.
Known for his commitment to the community, Mr. Eta is actively involved in several civic organizations. He served as vice president of both local and national chapters of the Local Cameroonian Community Organization and is an organizer for a local soccer team, where he previously served as captain. He also financially sponsors food preparation events for the local African community, such as the July 4th events in Detroit, MI. In addition, he previously served as the membership chair of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and is an inductee of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society.
Outside of his professional life, Mr. Eta finds fulfillment spending time with his family, playing soccer and coaching children's soccer teams. Looking ahead, he remains passionate about his work and is determined to continue his career for another 15 to 20 years. He recently completed a comprehensive artificial intelligence and machine learning program (AI/ML) from the University of Austin with aspirations to make further valuable contributions to the field of chemical engineering.
