He holds the title of professor emeritus at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering (previously Brooklyn Polytechnic), where he has taught electrical engineering since 1975, and received the distinguished teaching award in 1995. His areas of interest are electric power systems, electric drives, and power electronics. From 1995 to 1998, he served as the head of the electrical and computer engineering department at Polytechnic. Dr. Zabar's research interests include novel schemes for electromagnetic launchers, modeling of a cold load pickup of a large secondary distribution system, and innovation of magnetically levitated systems.
Since 1979, Dr. Zabar has received continuous research support from the two electric utilities in the New York City metropolitan area, Consolidated Edison, Long Island Lighting Company, LILCO (now National Grid), and he has played a pivotal role in securing funding and developing innovative solutions for the utility industry. This long-standing partnership exemplifies his ability to leverage his expertise for practical applications, benefiting both academia and industry. Additionally, Dr. Zabar holds six patents, more than 50 papers published in technical journals, and one book.
A native of Israel, Dr. Zabar's academic journey began at the esteemed Technion-Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering in 1965. He continued his studies at Technion and earned a PhD in electrical and electronics engineering in 1973. His rigorous education laid a strong foundation for his future endeavors and equipped him with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in his field.
In addition to his academic achievements, Dr. Zabar is a respected senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and a member of the scientific and engineering honor society, Sigma Xi. His involvement with both organizations has allowed him to stay at the forefront of technological advancements and contribute to the broader engineering community.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Zabar is a devoted father to three children and four grandchildren. He enjoys publishing books, traveling and exercising. Over the next several years, he plans to focus on publishing more books based on his extensive career notes.
