LANSING, MI, September 19, 2024 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Patricia A. Edwards, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Edwards, a distinguished scholar in literacy and education, has devoted over 35 years to advancing the understanding and practice of reading education. She currently holds the prestigious title of University Distinguished Professor at Michigan State University, a distinction she earned in 2023. Dr. Edwards began her tenure at MSU in 1989 as an associate professor and was promoted to full professor in 1994. She served as a professor of language and literacy until 2023, and she continues to make significant contributions to the academic community through her ongoing research and teaching.

In addition to her influence in the classroom, Dr. Edwards is deeply committed to outreach and community engagement. As a Senior University Outreach Fellow, she worked tirelessly to bridge the gap between academic research and its practical application in educational settings. Throughout her career, she has been actively involved with several professional organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors and later as President of the International Reading Association, now known as the International Literacy Association. Furthermore, she made history as the first African American President of the National Reading Conference, now known as the Literacy Research Association Inc.

Furthermore, Dr. Edwards has served as a member of the Michigan State University Institute for Families, Youth, and Children. Such roles reflect her commitment to fostering educational excellence and supporting community initiatives. Leading up to her exceptional career in academia, Dr. Edwards' own academic journey is marked by significant achievements that laid the foundation for her illustrious career.

Along with earning her Doctor of Philosophy in reading education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1979, Dr. Edwards holds an educational specialist diploma in reading education from Duke University in North Carolina, a Master of Science in elementary education from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and a Bachelor of Science in elementary education from Albany State University. Together, these academic credentials have equipped her with the knowledge and expertise to excel in her field.

Dr. Edwards credits much of her success to formative experiences in her youth, such as a pivotal visit to Ghana, where she visited W. E. B. Du Bois's grave, and reading Du Bois's book The Souls of Black Folk, which focused on her home, Albany, Georgia located in Dougherty County. This experience, along with her grandfather's establishment of a school for children from plantations and sharecropping families, instilled in her an early appreciation for reading and its power to connect individuals with the world. Dr. Edwards' passion for teaching was further solidified when she established a Saturday school in her backyard, taking on the role of an educator for her male classmates.

As a result of her impact and contributions, Dr. Edwards has been recognized with numerous awards throughout her career. She received the Educator Book Award from Delta Kappa Gamma Society International in 2017 for her influential work in literacy education. Earlier in her career, Michigan State University honored her with both the Distinguished Faculty Award in 2001 and the Teacher-Scholar Award in 1994, acknowledging her exceptional contributions to academia and student development. More recently, Dr. Edwards was honored as a 2024 American Educational Research Association Fellow and recognized as the 2024 William S. Gray Citation of Merit recipient by the International Literacy Association. Outside of her professional life, Dr. Edwards enjoys traveling and continues to engage with educators worldwide.

Looking ahead, Dr. Edwards intends to continue authoring books that explore family literacy and race-related issues in education, while also nurturing diverse and inclusive learning environments. Through partnerships with publishing companies and involvement in educational initiatives, she strives to build mutual understanding between parents and teachers and promote cultural awareness within communities. Dr. Edwards' career, as a whole, reflects her steadfast dedication to literacy education and her unwavering commitment to making a positive impact on students, educators, and communities worldwide.
