Dr. Newsome has dedicated 40 years to education, establishing a distinguished career with significant achievements and leadership roles. As a senior advisor at Benchmark Education Company since 2023, he continues to influence educational practices and policies as an expert in his field. Leveraging his former success, Dr. Newsome was the director of the Virginia Superintendent's Leadership Academy under the Virginia Association of School Superintendents from 2019 to 2023, where he developed the curriculum and mentored and guided current and future educational leaders.

Among many previous academic roles, Dr. Newsome spent ten years as the superintendent of Chesterfield County Public Schools, one of the nation's 100 largest school districts, beginning in 2006. During his tenure, Dr. Newsome implemented innovative technology initiatives that transformed the school system amidst draconian budget cuts during the 2010 recession. These initiatives also led to the district being honored at a White House ceremony as one of the country's only six #GoOpen Ambassador school districts.

Dr. Newsome previously served as an associate professor in practice at Harvard University, beginning in 2005, where he shared his expertise with future educators. He was also a Newport News Public Schools superintendent between 2003 and 2006. As a testament to Dr. Newsome's hard work, all high schools in Newport News were recognized by Newsweek Magazine as among the Best High Schools in America. Earlier in his career, he served as executive director at Prince George's County Public Schools from 1999 to 2003.

Dr. Newsome's academic background includes a bachelor's degree in art education from Elizabeth City State University in 1975, a master's degree in administration and supervision from Bowie State University in 1992, a doctorate in religious education from International Seminary in 2000, and a doctorate in educational leadership from Bowie State University in 2005.

In addition to his professional roles, Dr. Newsome has been actively involved in numerous civic organizations. He has served as the president of the National Bible College and Seminary since 2021 and as an executive board member of the Abukloi Foundation, South Sudan, since 2023. His contributions extend to serving on the executive board of directors for United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg and on the board of directors for Communities in Schools, Inc., among others. Dr. Newsome co-founded Mega Mentors in 2009 and has held other leadership positions for the Bridging RVA, Virginia Statewide K-12 Education Advisory Council, and vice chair of Virginia former governor, Tim Kaine's Education and Policy Transition Team.

Apart from his community work, Dr. Newsome has contributed to educational literature by co-authoring his 2020 book, "Breakthrough Leadership: Six Principles Guiding Schools Where Inequity Is Not an Option." He recently completed his newest book, "Transcend: My Story of Resilience, Faith, and Triumph from the Bottom to the Summit," published in 2024, which is available on Amazon, and has already begun working on his next book.

Dr. Newsome has been recognized with numerous accolades for his work, including the Founders Award from the International Film Festival, the FBI Community Service Award, and the Living Legends Award from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). He was also named as the Region I Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents. Dr. Newsome attributes his success to his unwavering faith and self-belief, which have been instrumental throughout his career.
