Her research group focuses on the design, characterization and application of different modalities, including adeno-associated viruses for gene therapy, and other protein-based molecules, to discover and develop new technologies and therapies for patients. Before starting in her current role, Dr. Bulutoglu honed her research expertise as a postdoctoral research fellow at Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital's Center for Engineering in Medicine and Surgery, where she led synthetic biology, tissue, genetic and protein engineering projects.
Previously, Dr. Bulutoglu was a graduate research assistant and a teaching assistant at prestigious universities such as Columbia and Yale. During her graduate studies at Columbia, she studied and engineered various protein-protein interactions for biotechnology applications. An expert in her field, she holds a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from Bogaziçi University, a Master of Science in biomedical engineering from Yale University, and a Doctor of Philosophy in chemical engineering from Columbia University. Dr. Bulutoglu authored many publications, and has delivered numerous talks at research institutes and academic conferences.
Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, she is an active participant in several professional societies including the American Chemical Society, the American Society of Gene and Cell Therapy, the Biomedical Engineering Society, the Antibody Society, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where she has served on various committees. In addition, she also serves on the National Science Foundation (NSF) Division of Technology, Innovation and Partnerships panels as a reviewer. In conjunction with her work, she has been mentoring junior researchers in STEM since her graduate school times and is a big believer in giving back to the community through various mentoring and other volunteer efforts.
Given her professional achievements, Dr. Bulutoglu has been honored with many awards including the Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and several awards from the American Chemical Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Columbia University, and Genentech.
