Mr. Perman's professional journey began with his studies in oceanography at the University of Florida in Coral Gables. He then embarked on a career as a chemical analyst in Rath Packing Company's Quality Control Laboratory, where he conducted wet chemical analyses for food products using various methods. He accomplished this while working the graveyard shift, and pursuit of his chemistry degree during the day. His dedication was rewarded when he earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from the University of Northern Iowa. Continuing his education he earned a master's degree in organic chemistry through his alma mater. Subsequently, he was hired by Deere & Co to set up a new laboratory where he excelled as a materials scientist specializing in quality assurance and control.
During his tenure as a corporate research specialist with 3M's Corporate Process Technology Center, Mr. Perman honed his chemistry and process improvement expertise. His role involved developing new technology, research and development for supercritical fluid-based processes and the synthesis of new polymers and photosensitizers. His contributions included developing and scaling supercritical fluid (SCF) processes for cleaning drug inhaler valve seals, foaming and impregnating polymers. During this time he specified, designed, and purchased a 10,000 psi SCF pilot-scale extraction system. Then, between 1997 and 2006, he supervised product development and manufacturing of Empore™ solid-phase extraction products for environmental and pharmaceutical testing with evaluation by HPLC-MS and other methods.
His work has left a significant mark on the industry. An experienced scientist, with a proven track record of success in the environmental services industry, Mr. Perman excels as Aqua Technica Inc. President, and with UCT Inc. as technical consultant and writer. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, he aligns himself with several professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Outside of his professional endeavors and affiliations, Mr. Perman served as a water analyst with the Boulder Creek Watershed Initiative, which requested the participation of citizen scientists. Between 2007 and 2014, he went out every month to analyze specific areas of the Boulder Creek Watershed in the Rocky Mountains.
Throughout his career, Mr. Perman has authored 20 US patents and 23 publications, including his books, "Contact 2039" and "Shenanigans—The Curious and Romantic Experiences of a Young Chemist: A True Story." Given his professional achievements, 3M has honored him several times for individual and team excellence awards. While his career has been filled with many highlights, Mr. Perman takes the most pride in his invention of a water purification tablet for field use, and his first patent where he developed a method to recover silver from waste by-products of chemical analysis.
Mr. Perman's career has been a testament to his hard work and dedication, which he credits to his innate curiosity. Looking ahead, he aims to continue his work with UCT Inc., for which he is currently writing and editing a book on solid-phase extraction. This book, which involves utilizing specialized bonded silica particles for drug analysis, is a testament to his commitment to advancing his field. In the long term, Mr. Perman intends to enjoy his retirement and continue his studies, a reflection of his lifelong love for learning, exploration, and the sciences.
