SAN FRANCISCO, CA, May 20, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sri Krishna Pattabhi Jois, the founder of Ashtanga yoga, passed away Monday at age 93. Jois, known affectionately as Gurujii, meaning 'honored guru' was an inspiration and leader to millions of yoga followers worldwide. Jois, is credited today for founding an movement, or Vinyasa, based form of yoga that has today morphed into many new types of exercise from Power Yoga to Pilates. Jois was born on July 26, 1915, (Guru Prim, full moon day) in the village of Kowshika, near Hassan, Karnataka, South India, and died May 18, 2009 in Mysore, India, where he had his Ashtanga Yoga Research Institute. Today Power Yoga has spawned into a worldwide phenomenon under the popularity of Jois' elder students, such as Larry Schultz of San Francisco who is yoga teacher to thousands, including celebrities Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead and model, Christy Turlington. Today Ashtanga Yoga Teacher Training has become the most popular path for yoga students looking to become teachers. Larry Schultz said on the passing of Pattabhi Jois, "He was a good friend and a great teacher, the entire worldwide yoga community will miss him and forever regard his gift of yoga to the world.
