JACKSON, MS, June 4, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Charlene E. McSwain, Researcher for Novartis AG and Researcher and Teacher for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in all aspects of pharmaceutical and educational research.
Ms. McSwain has 18 years of experience in the fields of pharmaceuticals and higher education. As a researcher for Novartis, she served as a company liaison with the U. S. Food and Drug Administration. Her responsibilities included monitoring studies made on new medications for pre-market approval and locating credentialed medical doctors to conduct the necessary research. As a researcher and teacher for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, Ms. McSwain taught Anesthesiology and Basic and Advanced Cardiac Life Support.
A widely respected resource in her field, Ms. McSwain has presented several lectures. As an educator for the University of Mississippi Medical Center, she developed a modular teaching program for basic and advanced cardiac life support which was published in Resuscitation and in the Journal of Medical Education. Ms. McSwain attributed her success to the support that she received from her parents.
Ms. McSwain attended Leakesville High School, Leakesville, Mississippi, where she was in the Beta Club and an Honors Graduate.
From 1971 to 1973, she attended Mississippi State College for Women and pursued a degree in Bacteriology. While there, she was a member of the Silhouette Social Club for three years, serving as Rush Chairman and Annual Song Fest Chairman for the Social Club Association.
From 1973 to 1976, she attended the University of Mississippi School of Nursing, pursuing a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing. While there, she served as President of the Mississippi Association of Student Nurses for two years, was a member of the American Nurses Association and was on the Dean's List. She was a Member of St. Andrews Church in Jackson.
Upon graduation from the University of Mississippi, she was employed from 1976 to 1978 by University Medical Center as Charge Nurse over the Surgical Nursing Unit.
From 1978 to 1980, she was employed by St. Dominic's Medical Center as a Staff Nurse with a specialty in scoliosis surgery due to her personal affliction with the disease. She also taught and provided emotional support to her patients who had scoliosis surgery.
From 1980 to 1984, she was an instructor for the Department of Anaesthesiology at the University of Mississippi Medical Center teaching the Freshman class and the Anaesthesiology Department Residential Program and Cardiac Education Program. She was a primary member of the Emergency Cardiac Team for the hospital and accepted a dual appointment for Cardiac Education for the Department of Anaesthesiology and Nursing Service. She holds an Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification from the American Heart Association. She was also Chairman and principal instructor for the Minority Consortium for Cardiac Care and was Director of Education of Emergency Room Medicine for Nursing Service.
She presented a paper in Houston, Texas on the steps necessary to pass a Good Samaritan law in each state. She directed the passage of and worked with Lt. Governor Evelyn Gandy on the most efficient way to lobby to achieve this goal in Mississippi. The Good Samaritan law was authored and presented by Senator John C. Stennis as House Bill 479 became law in the State of Mississippi.
During her eight years of employment at University Medical Center, she had the honor and opportunity to conduct research on cardiac teaching strategies and techniques to increase retention time on the skills learned during cardiac courses. These articles of research were published nationally and internationally and are be noted at the end of the release.
In 1984, she served as Assistant Director of Nursing and Director of Education for Hamilton Medical Center and Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana.
In 1985, due to health problems and ten operations, she was unable to work. However, due to boredom and lack of a sense of accomplishment, she pursued her degree in Exercise Physiology at the University of Southern Mississippi, where she graduated in 1990, maintaining a 3.5 GPA.
From 1990 to 1992, she worked as a Research Assistant for Dr. John Rush at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center/Parkland Hospital. They conducted clinical trials for pharmaceutical companies who were trying to market new drugs.
From 1993 to 1995, she was employed with ClinTrials to manage the clinical portion of the pharmaceutical processes.
From 1995 to the present, she has been unable to work due to health problems and numerous operations.
