PHILADELPHIA, PA, June 24, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. David DiGiallorenzo, one of the top Philadelphia periodontists, has been selected to present a panel at the 95th Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP). Dr. DiGiallorenzo's lecture, titled "Soft Tissue Grafting Using Bio-Active Modifiers (PRGF) and Dermis Allograft for Root Coverage," will highlight the techniques of this new tissue-grafting method and field questions from attendees.
"The meeting is an annual event designed to share the latest research and clinical developments with colleagues from all over the world," said Dr. DiGiallorenzo. "It is a total honor to be able to present at such a prestigious meeting and share my work with the other practitioners."
Soft tissue grafts are used by periodontists to cover exposed tooth roots or reconstruct gum tissue damaged by infection, disease, or trauma. Grafts are done with either donor tissue or with gum tissue from the patient's palate. Gum grafting will often improve the foundation for tooth retention, protecting tooth nerves and roots, and reduced tooth sensitivity.
"Gum grafting has traditionally been an uncomfortable procedure for patients," said Dr. DiGiallorenzo. "In recent years, with the advent of donor tissue and bio-active modifiers, patients are responding to the comfortable, simple methods to treat gum recession."
Receding gums can occur from periodontal disease such as gingivitis or periodontitis. Also, aggressive tooth-brushing can damage the gum-line and result in deteriorating gums. Philadelphia periodontics specialist Dr. DiGiallorenzo's panel will describe the latest treatment for tissue grafting and preventative measures patients can practice.
"Patients with gum grafting needs may not have to have tissue from the roof of the mouth taken," said Dr. DiGiallorenzo. "Donor tissue and the use of the patient's own blood proteins allow the predictable reconstruction of weak or diseased gum tissue in one simple visit. A single site, as well as an entire mouth can be completed in one visit."
The American Academy of Periodontology is committed to advancing dentistry from an evidence-based approach, said Dr. DiGiallorenzo. The 95th Annual AAP Meeting will take place from Saturday, September 12 through Tuesday September 14, 2009, in Boston, MA at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The AAP expects over 4000 dental specialists in attendance, and the conference will host nearly 50 events, workshops, panels, and discussion groups throughout the event.
