State Statistics for Car Accidents

Statistics released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the National Highway Safety Administration stated fatalities have decreased slightly in the recent past

ORLANDO, FL, August 01, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Motorists in Florida are more likely to die in an automobile accident than anywhere else in the United States except for California and Texas.

Statistics released by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles and the National Highway Safety Administration stated fatalities have decreased slightly in the recent past. The decline was attributed to safer cars and measures taken by law enforcement.

However, the weekends continue to be the most dangerous times to be on our roads, and tourist season, November to May, always sees an increase in the number of accidents with increased traffic and congestion. There is an average of forty-three fatal car accidents in Florida each year. In Florida, as in other areas of the country, car accidents have become a common occurrence.

In Florida, automobile accident deaths are categorized as 60% due to crashes involving "roadway departures", 33% involving crashes at intersections, 12% involving large trucks and over six hundred deaths involving pedestrians and bicycles. Of the over three thousand motorists killed in automobile accidents in Florida, 41% were occupants of automobiles and 26% were occupants of light trucks.

Alcohol was involved in three out of four car crashes in Florida and speed was a factor in 17% of car crash deaths. Six out of ten victims who suffered fatal injuries were not wearing seatbelts.

There are over six million automobile accidents in this country every year, with three million injured and forty-five thousand deaths.

The most common causes of automobile accidents include:
• Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol
• Speeding
• Driver fatigue
• Aggressive driving or road rage
• Distracted drivers
• Adverse weather conditions

Safe driving habits are important to your physical, emotional and financial well being. An automobile accident can result in devastating injuries and financial losses. If you are involved in an automobile accident, through no fault of your own, you may be entitled to compensation for your losses.
