/24-7PressRelease/ - SAN DIEGO, CA, February 23, 2006 - Iomega Corporation (NYSE: IOM), a global leader in data storage celebrating 25 years of business, today announced the latest milestone in the growth of the Iomega REV Drive platform: one million Iomega REV 35 gigabyte* disks have shipped in just 22 months.
Iomega's REV family of products was first introduced in April 2004 and has won over 20 worldwide industry awards. A durable, dependable hard-drive based removable storage solution for backup and archiving of critical data for small and medium-sized businesses, the Iomega REV drive is currently shipping in ATAPI, external USB 2.0, FireWire , SCSI, SATA and multi-disk autoloader configurations. To date, Iomega has also sold approximately 200,000 REV drives, for a 'tie rate' of approximately five disks per drive.
"In less than two years, the REV drive has quickly proved itself to be an ideal backup and archive solution for SMBs that need a storage technology that's dependable, durable, easier to use and more cost effective than other backup products," said Tom Kampfer, Chief Operating Officer, Iomega Corporation. "In a short period of time, REV products are seeing broad-based adoption as a small business storage standard in entrepreneurial offices from the U.S. to Europe to Asia. Our message to small businesses of 'capacity without limits and backup without worries' is clearly resonating. When it comes to backing up and protecting critical information on the desktop or on the network, Iomega's REV drive is better, faster and less expensive than the alternatives and represents the product choice to simplify your life."
Wolfgang Schlichting, Research Director at IDC, a leading provider of global IT research and advice, said, "Iomega REV products are primarily targeting the SMB space, where they are competing with optical drives, external hard drives, and low-end tape products. Iomega's 1 millionth REV disk shipment in its first two years of availability illustrates that a removable cartridge for safe keeping together with hard drive performance is an attractive combination to the small business segment."
REV Products Everywhere
Designed to provide the performance of a hard drive with the removability of tape, Iomega's REV technology (http://www.iomega-europe.com/eu/en/about_iomega/news/about_news_details_en.aspx?id=64 ) performs backup and archive duties in small businesses, government agencies and corporate offices around the world, often replacing tape-based products, external hard drives, optical drives and other backup and archive products. Graphic design firms are using REV disks as project disks to save and share their large files. Academic institutions are using REV disks to store and protect students' multi-media files. Network professionals are using REV technology as a cost-effective, random access tape-replacement solution. Compared to tape, the REV drive generally costs less and works faster, reducing network backup times while delivering an estimated one million rewrites per disk.
Internal Iomega studies show that approximately one-third of REV customers are using REV drives as a tape replacement product; one-third have switched from optical and external hard drive products to a REV solution to meet their backup and archiving needs; and another third of today's REV customers are instituting their first backup and archive plan to protect their data.
"Iomega's REV technology is bringing awareness to the small business world that you need to protect the lifeblood of your business," said Kampfer. "Not only is the REV drive becoming the product of choice among those who were already backing up and archiving their data, but the ease-of-use, dependability and economics of REV technology are creating converts to the importance of protecting critical files to ensure the data will be available when it's needed most."
REV Products in Vertical Markets
In addition to penetrating the SMB space with REV technology, Iomega is working with companies in specific vertical markets where tape is commonly used but REV technology has clear performance advantages. Last fall, Iomega announced that Grass Valley, a division of Thomson, will introduce REV-based products for professional broadcasting, filmmaking and the pro A/V industry. The first of the Grass Valley products, REV Pro drives and REV Pro disks, are expected to be introduced in the first quarter of 2006. The Grass Valley Infinity Series camcorder and other Grass Valley professional audio and video devices that use REV Pro drives and 35GB REV Pro disks, are expected to debut in the first half of this year. REV Pro disks allow users to record more than two hours of SD (standard definition) or 45 minutes of HD (high definition) video on a single REV disk.
REV Technology Versus Competitors
The REV drive entered a crowded market at its product launch in April 2004. Competitors included various flavors of digital tape drives (DDS-4, DDS-5, DLT), magneto-optical (MO) drives, optical drives (DVD, CD), external hard drives, and flash drives.
The REV drive standard has succeeded in reaching the million-disk milestone due to its advantages in speed, capacity, removability, and low cost. REV drives provide relatively instant access to data, whereas tape drives must spool from one end of a tape to the other. REV drives are durable and reliable, giving service bureaus an ideal project disk with an estimated million rewrites and an estimated archival life of 30 years. REV disks are also highly portable (10 x 77 x 75 mm) and low cost (about $50 per disk in quantities of four), making them a practical data backup solution.
REV Product News In 2006
Iomega plans to introduce new REV products this year, including higher capacity REV drives and disks and new automation products. "Iomega has just begun to build the REV product family," said Kampfer. "Our REV products are making backup and archiving of critical data seamless and effortless for SMBs, as well as providing certain vertical markets with a better alternative to tape-based products. That's a great start in less than two years, and we're going to build on that heritage with new products in our REV technology platform."
