The Science of Laser Acne Treatment

The Erbium laser works by resurfacing the skin, removing the outer layer to get below the scar. The goal of this procedure is to leave a smoother, more-pliable layer of skin once it regenerates. The scar's age, depth, and previous laser treatments all affect the outcome of this type of treatment. However, for people with "active" acne, this procedure is not recommended.

People with red acne scars are often good candidates for pulse-dye laser treatment. This type of acne scar is marked by redness and an inflamed appearance. Pulse dye laser treatment works by reducing the redness associated with this type of acne scar. Using light and heat, the pulse dye laser treatment shrinks the blood vessels surrounding the scar, reducing redness as the scar heals.

Pulse-dye laser treatment is completely safe, although patients may feel a slight sting as the laser passes over the affected area. However, the procedure is so painless that anesthesia is not required and patients are able to return to work the same day.

For people with darker skin, q-switched laser treatments are an excellent option. The q-switched laser breaks up the acne scar's collected pigment, removing the brown mark. The q-switched laser is also effective at breaking up brown age spots and removing tattoos. One caveat, though: patients who have taken Accutane for acne in the previous six months are not recommended for this type of procedure.
