The Dream of scholarship offers from colleges and universities.... The Dream of the Olympics.... They all come to the 2nd Annual Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays being held on April 29, 2006 at the High School named after the ultimate dreamer, Martin Luther King, Jr. These High School students come from near and far to "Chase their Dreams". These athletes have been taught by their dedicated coaches that through perseverance, persistence and preparedness they can "Catch their Dreams". Such coaches include Harry Weaver with the Renaissance High School girls team; Robert Lynch with the Mumford High School boys team; Mike Jurasek from Albion High and Michael Cunningham from James Ford Rhodes High School in Cleveland, OH, just to name a few.
Former Edwin Denby High School competitor and all-city track and field athlete, Robert S. Shumake wants to help these athletes "Live their Dreams". The Detroit businessman and founder of the Inheritance Investment Group, a Detroit real estate investment service firm is the inspiration behind this unique and novel track meet. Mr. Shumake has guided this project from its initial seedling to full blossom. This influential businessman, entrepreneur, lecturer, author, philanthropist, presidential and gubernatorial appointee has the wherewithal, contacts and skills to make some of these youngsters dreams come true.
To guarantee the success of this event, Mr. Shumake has assembled an outstanding team consisting of; Reverend Wendell Anthony, President/Founder Freedom Institute; Tiffany Douglas, Executive Director of the UNCF-Detroit Branch; Jackie DeVose, US Track and Field Association and Maryann Lee, Exec. Director Freedom Institute. This "Dream Team" will provide a platform where top athletes can test their skills against the best in their field nationally as well as showcase their academic abilities. The "Dream Team" is cognizant of the primary objective for the Robert S. Shumake Scholarship Relays which is assisting young people fulfill their dreams. "So many of us state that the youth is our future but few of us actually try and make this statement come true". "This event gives me the opportunity to actually do something for our youth", so states Mr. Shumake.
The Robert S. Shumake Foundation provides the scholarships which are administered by Ms. Tiffany Douglas UNCF Executive Director, Detroit branch. "The UNCF administers over 500 scholarship programs to UNCF schools and other accredited two and four year colleges" so states Ms. Douglas.
