No Driver's License Needed to Get Auto Insurance

Contrary to popular belief, having a driver's license is not required by all companies for insuring an automobile.

LOS ANGELES, CA, October 14, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Many consumers are unaware of having the availability to purchase car insurance policies for those who do not have driver's licenses. It is recognized that some people lack licensing, have international licenses or even international ID cards, but are not licensed to operate vehicles in the state they may reside in. In addition, there are many who simply are unlicensed even though they own a vehicle and need coverage in order to maintain a valid registration.

Unfortunately many people operate vehicles under the misconception that they cannot obtain auto insurance with no drivers license and make the unwise decision to go uninsured. Others believe that they will pay higher premiums because they do not have a driver's license. Neither of these misconceptions is necessarily true. While it is not recommended to drive an automobile while unlicensed, it may be wise to obtain a policy for various reasons.

A main reason that it may be wise to purchase a policy whether licensed or not is that most states require an automobile to be insured in order to keep the registration valid. Keeping vehicles registered can prevent the need to reinstate registration once driving privileges are obtained. If an individual has never been licensed, they may be required to obtain their licensing before a company will renew their policy.

Each company abides by their own underwriting guidelines and not all will insure unlicensed individuals. When applying for coverage, the consumer should be sure to fully disclose their situation and any information regarding why they are not currently licensed. Any misrepresentation may allow a company the right not to honor claims for the insured.

Although some companies may cover unlicensed policyholders for damages following an accident, any legal repercussions resulting from operating an automobile illegally will most likely be the sole responsibility of the driver. Penalties can become quite severe if caught driving illegally, especially following an accident. One can refer to http://www.cga.ct.gov/2006/rpt/2006-R-0072.htm for more details regarding fines and penalties.
