99 Cent Taquito Returns

Whataburger offers a break on breakfast favorite through January 18

SAN ANTONIO, TX, December 22, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Whataburger will sell its famous taquitos for just 99 cents starting December 22, 2009 and continuing through January 18, 2010. The breakfast staple (and late-night favorite) is one of Whataburger's most popular items, selling about 34 million taquitos in 2009 - that's one taquito every two seconds from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m.

Regularly priced at $1.89 to $1.99, Whataburger's version of the traditional Mexican food is a flour tortilla filled with freshly scrambled eggs and a choice of bacon, sausage or potato. Customers can customize their taquitos with cheese, grilled jalapenos, onions or picante sauce. It's available only on Whataburger's breakfast menu, served from 11 p.m. to 11 a.m. daily.

"Our taquitos have consistently been one of our most popular items and have a very loyal following. Our customers look forward to the return of 99 cent taquitos all year," said Rich Scheffler, Group Director of Marketing for Whataburger Restaurants, LP. "Whataburger's combination of fresh, quality ingredients and made-to-order service make taquitos a great way to start or end the day."

Whataburger's taquitos have Facebook groups devoted to them and customers call or e-mail the company regularly to express their enthusiasm for their beloved breakfast item. Former Texas resident and customer Jonathan Keck from Owego, Ill. recently wrote to the company: "No one else can better serve late night munchies, hunger pain lunches, or early morning taquito cravings, than your organization. To put it plainly, I MISS YOU GUYS!!!"

Whataburger has served breakfast at all of its restaurants since 1979 and added taquitos to the menu in the early 1980s. They gained popularity in 1982 when Whataburger began operating all of its restaurants 24 hours a day, seven days a week and offering breakfast overnight. Since then, taquitos have gained a loyal following amongst late-night snackers, nightshift workers, emergency responders and students, among others.

ABOUT WHATABURGER:
Whataburger has focused on its fresh, made-to-order burgers and friendly customer service since 1950 when Harmon Dobson opened the first Whataburger as a small roadside burger stand in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dobson gave his restaurant a name he hoped to hear customers say every time they took a bite of his made-to-order burgers: "What a burger!" Within the first week, people lined up around the block for his 25 cent, all-American beef burgers served on five-inch buns. Today, the company is headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, with nearly 700 locations in 10 states with sales of more than $1 billion annually.
