MADRID, SPAIN, February 10, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Art lovers staying in Madrid hotels can experience works from some of Holland's most famous painters at an exhibition taking place at one of the city's galleries.
Until April 11th, Dutch Painters at the Prado will showcase a collection of 17th century masterpieces, many of which have rarely been seen since the 1940s.
The exhibition has been arranged into three sections, which are Dutch paintings from the collections of Philip IV and Charles II, Dutch paintings from the collections of the Bourbons and new acquisitions in the form of gifts and purchases.
Many have undergone work to restore them to their former glory and include Judith delivering the Head of Holofernes by Salomon de Bray, Old Man Reading by Candlelight by Godfried Schalcken and many still lives by Willem Claesz Heda.
The term Dutch Painting refers to works from the Northern United Provinces which became an independent nation when the Treaty of Utrecht was signed in 1579. Holland was the largest of these provinces.
There are 56 works in the collection, which is curated by Teresa Posada and tickets costing EUR8 (GBP6.99) can be purchased from the desk upon entering the museum.
Later this year, an exhibition entitled Turner and the Masters will be coming to the Prado.
