SALAMANCA, SPAIN, February 12, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Anyone who has booked accommodation in Salamanca this April may be intrigued by some of the unusual traditions taking place in towns around the city.
One celebration that attracts locals and tourists each year is the carnival held in Toro, a town to the north of Salamanca, in honour of Don Carnal.
Described as one of the most famous festivals in the Castilla y Leon region, it has been declared an event of special interest by the state's tourism board.
The parades begin on Good Friday, with drum beats and chanting reverberating around the village's streets.
Easter Sunday offers a tradition not found anywhere else in Spain, where local residents don costumes and re-enact the marriage between Don Carnal and Dona Cuaresma.
Following this celebration, Easter Monday is the designated children's day, with Carnival Tuesday once again including adults in the festivities.
This is the penultimate day of the event and it is marked by a spectacular parade through the village featuring a procession of lights and colours.
Ash Wednesday sees the celebrations come to a close with the comic and unusual Entierro de la Sardina (the burial of the sardine), which finishes with a feast of sardines to say goodbye to Don Carnal until the next year.
To make the most of the Toro Carnival - you should consider booking your hoteles Salamanca to avoid disappointment.
