LateRooms.com - Naples' Urban Superstar Show Celebrates Underground Art

    NAPLES, ITALY, May 14, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- If guests at Naples hotels enjoy a bit of subversive art, then they may want to head down to the Museo D'Arte Contemporanea Donnaregina (Madre) for the Urban Superstar Show.

Put together by David Vecchiato, this project brings together artists from different scenes such as Pop Surrealism and urban art for a collection that will run until June 14th.

The venue stated that the curator wants to offer a panoramic view of what is happening in modern art and see if he can contextualise them with regards to previous movements, with Pop Art proving to be a common theme.

Vecchiato suggests that cult legends such as Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton have influenced many Pop Surrealists, including the designers of modern comic strips like Tank Girl, satire magazine MAD and the Gorillaz.

This exhibition at Madre aims to offer attendees a clearer idea of how today's cartoonists and creators of low-brow art have their roots in the work of Andy Warhol and his contemporaries.

"Earlier in timeline we have Fleischer's Studios' cartoon style (Betty Boop, Popeye), which suggested an aesthetics among pop iconography, scary themes and surreal scenarios that we find in several works of these artists," explained the organisers.

It is free to enter the art space and doors are open from 10:00 to 21:00 (local time) on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, while the venue does not shut until midnight on Saturdays and Sundays.

The building is closed on Tuesdays.
