North Carolina Rhinoplasty Surgeon Says Sometimes Less Is More

Dr. M. Sean Freeman, a double board certified facial plastic surgeon with over 20 years of experience, says that he is seeing a trend toward more nose surgery patients who want more subtle changes to the shape and size of their nose.

CHARLOTTE, NC, July 15, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. M. Sean Freeman (www.onlyfaces.com), a board-certified facial plastic surgeon who specializes in procedures such as rhinoplasty in North Carolina, has noticed a growing trend of patients who want minor changes to the shape and size of their noses, as opposed to more dramatic changes.

In the past, many of those who underwent nose surgery (rhinoplasty) believed that the only way to achieve their desired results was with significant alterations. However, technological advances and refined surgical technique make it possible for people who desire only small modifications to achieve the look they want without changing the appearance of their entire face.

"It's not just that people don't have to alter the basic character of their nose - they actually shouldn't. It's very important to maintain the unique beauty of each individual," Dr. Freeman explains. "Many patients only need small alterations, such as smoothing the bump on their nose, or adjusting the width of their nostrils."

With the use of computer imaging, Dr. Freeman and other facial plastic surgeons in North Carolina and throughout the country are able to work with patients to develop a better understanding of their goals for surgery and to establish realistic expectations. This process ensures that patient and surgeon are "on the same page." However, it's important to point out that the images produced are certainly not guaranteed results.

"Computer imaging can really improve the pre-surgery process," Dr. Freeman says. "A lot of patients may think they know how they'd like their nose to look - but they don't know how to make the necessary changes. I've also had many patients discover, with computer imaging, that they need to adjust their desired results - they find that they'd look better with more subtle changes. After we use computer imaging to guide our discussions, these patients feel a lot more confident going into surgery, because they know that we are on the same page."

At Dr. Freeman's practice in North Carolina, rhinoplasty isn't the only option for some people who would like to alter the appearance of their nose. For very slight, very specific, and temporary improvement, injecting dermafillers into parts of the nose can help to improve symmetry or smooth the dorsal hump (the bump often found in the middle of the nose). Using this technique, plastic surgeons can achieve quick, precise improvements; but dermafillers do not fix everything - they cannot reduce the size of the nose or accomplish many other changes. By choosing surgical rhinoplasty over dermafillers, Charlotte nose surgery patients achieve permanent improvement for the full range of aesthetic concerns.

"When it comes to the face, small changes can make a big difference. Maintaining natural beauty while refining symmetry and balance requires a great deal of skill, experience, and education. That's why I think it's so important to choose a board-certified facial plastic surgeon for your rhinoplasty. Facial plastic surgeons have what it takes to make wise decisions, provide solid advice, and effectively perform nose surgery. Because of my 'only faces' approach, my patients know they are receiving only the best care."
