There Are Some Fantastic Opportunities If You're Ready To Seize Them

Periods of economic slowdown lead to three ways of thinking.

LONDON, ENGLAND, October 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The first is a coping mechanism shared by a minority of the population who actually lose their job or their business. For the vast majority suffering no material loss, there is a second mindset of uncertainty and stagnation. And at the other end of the spectrum, there is another minority of the population who seize the moment and use it to their own benefit. Interestingly the Chinese word for crisis is represented by two characters: Danger + Opportunity (wei-chi). In periods of change, uncertainty and 'crisis', it is the individual mindset that proves most influential in determining recovery or the achievement of goals. As one successful businessman called Henry put it in the 1920s, "Whether you think you can, or think you can't: you're right". He should know. He was busily creating his Ford empire at the time.

So, what's our mindset to be over the next six months?

Even last April, The Guardian ran its headline, "The recession's over, so let's start recruiting" based on a case study of Google looking to take on 500 new staff globally, with 100 based in London. "If you're happy to rely on Google as an economic indicator," the story continued, "things are looking up. Either that, or it's a clever strategic move to take advantage of the downturn to claim a little more space for itself." Google's international recruitment drive grasps the logic of a report, Ready to grow: business priorities for education and skills, published by the CBI around the same time, which said: "Half of employers (51%) are concerned they will not be able to fill posts requiring the right graduate level or higher skills in the coming years, and a third (32%) don't believe it will be possible to fill intermediate level jobs, requiring skills equivalent to A level."

Our response to the 2009 downturn was to recruit more consultants, not less, because we knew we could attract the best for the growth period that has already started. It was the right decision because our data tells us that vacancies rose 28% between last April and June and we helped 40% more people find permanent work than the year before in the same period. And moving forward, our mindset will continue to focus on opportunities whilst carefully considering how to minimise the threats, because that's how we can provide a more responsive and effective service to you. I hope you will draw some inspiration from this issue of REED Specialist News which we have written around the theme of Solutions to Problems. We wish you all the success for the remainder of 2010.
