She started her career in the pharmaceutical industry in 1981 as a medical information scientist. Shortly thereafter, she was promoted to assistant director, where she oversaw the transplantation clinical data/programs. She then moved into clinical research and medical affairs.

In 1985, Mrs. Capito-Wightman received a master's degree in Pharmaceutical Business/Immunology from Seton Hall University. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry in 1981 from Caldwell College, and is a member of the Society of Toxicology, the Association of Clinical Research Professionals, the Drug Information Association and ASCO.
