The nationwide holiday commemorates and acknowledges the importance of trees to our environment and society.

The first Arbor Day was celebrated on April 10, 1872, when it was founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The holiday was created to encourage people to plant and care for trees, "arbor" being the Latin word for "tree". It was estimated that one million trees were planted on the first Arbor Day.
