HAUPPAUGE, NY, April 27, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Hauppauge Industrial Park (HIP) is a major contributor to tax revenues for Smithtown and Islip New York where it is located. The 1,400 acre industrial park is one of the largest in the nation and home to 1,300 companies employing 55,000 people in manufacturing, construction and services industries. These factors make it a major user of energy as well. In 2009, HIP building owners paid over $30 million to LIPA for electrical energy and approximately $12 million to National Grid for natural gas. Now, in the first project of its kind conducted at a major industrial park, HIA-LI, the recognized voice for business on Long Island, this week announced it is leading an energy conservation project for the Park that is expected to determine energy usage with the goal of reducing energy consumption by at least 15 percent. In addition, HIA-LI is partnering with ENERGY STAR as way to demonstrate its commitment to promoting energy efficiency and sustainable business practices.
The announcement comes during a press conference following the annual HIA-LI-hosted Hauppauge Industrial Park Update which provides details and status updates about studies and ongoing projects that impact critical Park infrastructures, including energy, sewers and transportation.
"We are working to provide HIP building owners with the information and education to improve the energy performance of their buildings now and into the future," said Jack Kulka, HIA-LI Board Member, HIA-LI Energy, Utilities and Infrastructure Committee Chair, and CEO of Kulka Construction. "We have a unique opportunity here to show businesses how they can save a substantial amount of money, which ultimately would help the economics of the region."
"We realize that you can't control what you don't measure properly, and HIA-LI has taken a leadership position by introducing the HIA-LI Energy Conservation Project to help HIP building owners accomplish their energy utilization and financial goals," said Anthony Coppola, HIP Energy Conservation Project Co-Chair and Managing Partner MC Alliance Corp. "Proper benchmarking and analysis of current energy consumption allows building owners to identify the right series of steps to document results."
"I applaud HIA-LI for its commitment to energy efficiency and our environment. I am confident that with the assistance of LIPA's wide array of commercial efficiency programs, we can help HIA-LI achieve its energy reduction goals and become "Green" leaders in the business community," said Michael D. Hervey, LIPA chief operating officer.
"HIA-LI understands the importance of creating solutions to help companies improve their bottom lines. Our Energy Conservation Project is a great example of that," said Terri Alessi-Miceli, HIA-LI president.
In announcing the HIA-LI Hauppauge Industrial Park (HIP) Energy Conservation Project, Kulka introduced a seven step process designed to uncover Park energy usage and to begin the process of energy conservation that would save on energy costs, as well as reduce the overall carbon footprint of the Hauppauge Industrial Park.
Hauppauge Industrial Park (HIP) Energy Conservation Project
The seven steps for the project are:
1. Determine Current Energy Usage
2. Involve the Park in the Project
3. Create an Energy Survey
4. Create an HIA-LI HIP Energy Conservation Working Committee
5. Evaluate Data and Create Initial Energy Utilization Benchmark Report
6. Present Update at HIA-LI Green Conference in October 2012
7. Educate and Inform Business Owners on Incentives and Tax Rebates
HIA-LI and ENERGY STAR
The EPA's ENERGY STAR partnership offers a proven energy management strategy that helps in measuring current energy performance, setting goals, tracking savings, and rewarding improvements. HIA-LI plans to leverage ENERGY STAR tools and resources to help HIA-LI members meet their energy efficiency goals.
"EPA is pleased to work with HIA-LI and the Hauppauge Industrial Park on this energy conservation project," said Judith A. Enck, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Regional Administrator. "By committing to reducing energy consumption, the companies in this industrial park are not only recognizing that they can have a positive influence on our environment, they are also recognizing the cost-savings potential of energy efficiency and sustainability."
