KENILWORTH, NJ, July 12, 2012 /24-7PressRelease/ -- However, the question remains the same as it's always been - which companies can you trust to provide the highest quality and most reasonably priced services? The truth is, some local HVAC businesses are exploiting opportunities to take advantage of naive homeowners while inflating the price of routine maintenance, exaggerating the unit malfunctions and persuading the consumer to pay for unnecessary repairs or replacements.
In a story that aired on Tuesday, July 10th, NBC's Today Show exposed the lack of integrity of some air conditioning repair companies. In preparation for the story, the Today Show contacted the Air Conditioning Contractors of America (ACCA) and North American Technician Excellence (NATE) for additional information. Both organizations cited the NJ based heating and cooling company, Meyer & Depew, as a reputable company - one that's operational excellence, professionalism and customer satisfaction would be representative of the very best HVAC companies in the area. The Today Show subsequently selected Meyer & Depew to act as an expert and evaluate the remedies of a standard air conditioning malfunction by service providers who were contacted.
"We are very grateful that ACCA and NATE recognized Meyer & Depew as a leader in our industry and appreciate the opportunity to be featured on the Today Show," said Bobby Ring, Meyer & Depew President. "Our number one priority is to treat our customers with the utmost respect and be honest with them about the types of problems that need to be addressed, and those that do not. We're not interested in deception. We operate with the homeowner's best interests in mind."
The hidden camera report tracks the efforts of several local HVAC repair companies to diagnose and repair a simple problem. Bobby Ring was selected as a regional expert to evaluate the recommendations performed by the HVAC technicians.
The problem featured in the story was a broken low voltage wire in the condensing unit. The standard remedy is to re-strip the wire and reconnect with a wire nut. It is a routine and relatively simple repair that requires average charge. In the Today Show piece, unfortunately all of the contractors that came to the home quickly identified the problem but all reported that the unit required additional unnecessary repairs.
Repair scams have become more prevalent as many HVAC companies have looked to capitalize on opportunities presented to them by unsuspecting homeowners. This story shows how important it is to do your due diligence and research the companies thoroughly before committing to an HVAC company.
"The best way to avoid being in this situation is to establish a relationship with a contractor before you have a problem," Ring said. "Seek referrals from those who have already had a positive experience with a reputable HVAC company and enter into a service plan with them to service your systems on an annual basis. This way when you have a breakdown you'll already be working with someone you know and trust."
