London's Underground, the World's First Subterranean Transport System, Marks 150 Years Since it First Started

Further initiatives includes a campaign which will reveal 150 people whose personal stories will help to demonstrate the vibrant history of the Tube, and special commissions by Art on the Underground by famous contemporary artists including a high profile British artist bringing artworks into every station on the Tube network and screenings of London Underground themed films.

The Royal Mail is marking the birthday with a special edition of London Underground stamps, released on Thursday 9th January, presenting a timeline of events from the first steam-driven Metropolitan Railway service in 1863 to Sir Norman Foster's modern Canary Wharf station, opened in 1999. Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the design duo behind the Olympic torch, have designed a collectable GBP2 coin to commemorate the 150th anniversary, and passengers will be able to buy a limited edition souvenir Oyster card featuring the new Underground 150th anniversary logo.
