Exhibitions on Gauguin, L.S. Lowry and Vermeer Draw Art Lovers to London in June 2013

The Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, another highlight of summer art in London, opens just two days later on Monday 10th June 2013 and includes Grayson Perry's 'The Vanity of Small Differences' among more than one thousand works of art on display. A 'wall-hanging' by the artist El Anatsui created a from aluminium bottle-tops, printing plates, roofing sheets and other materials greets visitors as they enter gallery via the imposing Annenberg Courtyard.

L.S. Lowry gets a long overdue exhibition (from 25th June to 20th October 2013) at Tate Britain where two British painters, Patrick Caulfield and Gary Hume, are presented in parallel giving art lovers the opportunity to see two influential artists form different generations in one day. Both exhibitions have already started and run until 8th September 2013.

The Courtauld Gallery showcases important art works by Post-Impressionist master Paul Gauguin in 'Collecting Gauguin' (20th June to 8th September) including one of only two marble sculptures ever created by the artist.

In Marylebone, from Thursday 20th June 2013, The Wallace Collection presents 'The Discovery of Paris' featuring more than 60 watercolours, preparatory drawings and associated prints by early 19th-century British artists including outstanding works by Turner, Girtin and Bonington.

Beginning on Wednesday 12th June 2013 London's first purpose built gallery, the Dulwich Picture Gallery, looks at paintings created by artists who studied at the Slade School of Art in London between 1908 and 1912, before and after the Great War of 1914-18. 'A Crisis of Brilliance' features artists such as C.R.W. Nevinson, Stanley Spencer and Dora Carrington represented, who later became some of the most well-known and distinctive British artists of the twentieth century.

The annual BP Portrait Award returns to the National Portrait Gallery on 20th June and continues until 15th September 2013 while its neighbour, the National Gallery, stages an exhibition on 'Vermeer and Music: The Art of Love and Leisure' from 26th June to 8th September 2013. Visitors will get an insight into music as a pastime of the elite in the northern Netherlands during the 17th century, and three times a week can experience live performances in the exhibition space by the Academy of Ancient Music.

See beautiful galaxies and marvel at the stars in 'Visions of the Universe' (7th June to 15th September 2013) at the National Maritime Museum where images vary from the earliest hand drawings to the latest footage from the Mars Curiosity rover.
