Mr. Slater studied architecture, graphic design and marketing at the Layton School of Art, accounting and business administration at the Spencerian Business College, philosophy at LSE, industrial safety at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, and French at the Alliance Francaise de Bruxelles-Europe.

He is a member of the Knox Sport Parachute Club; a founding chapter member of The SIDA Foundation; an associate fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute; chairman of the Industrial Development Committee, U.S. Chamber of Commerce; and a member of Mensa Australia; American Mensa; the U.S. Army Reserve; and Chateau Sainte-Anne. Currently, he is a board member of the local Rotary International chapter.

Active in managing charitable organizations, he is president of the Plymouth Arts Center and has been elected to the board of directors of the Plymouth Arts Foundation where a major capital campaign has just been successfully completed to enlarge and improve the facility. He is an advocate for the visual arts, while supporting the foundation's mission to enliven the spirit of the community and to enrich the lives of all by providing diverse experiences in the arts. He also belongs to Reins, Inc. and is a S.C.O.R.E. volunteer consultant.

He was honored with the Service Above Self Award for his Community Work in 2009 and the Citizen of the Year Award, by the Rotary International and the Ad Altare Dei Award by the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoys traveling, reading, physics, philosophy, carpentry work and riding motorcycles.
