First Nepalese Conference on Hematology Organized by the Binaytara Foundation

    KATHMANDU, NEPAL, September 16, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The International Conference on Advances in Hematologic Malignancies, held at the Yaki and Yeti Hotel in Kathmandu, Nepal, by the US-based Binaytara Foundation (BTF), concluded today. The President of BTF, Dr.Binay Shah, expressed his gratitude to the participants for contributing to the first meeting in hematology ever organized in Nepal. More than 30 speakers presented the newest findings in biology, genetics and therapy of leukemias and other hematologic malignancies. They also discussed current challenges in providing the best care for patients in developing countries.

The Binaytara Foundation (BTF) that promoted the conference announced on Saturday the recipients of the 2013 Annual BTF medical research grant. The following 4 investigators from multiple Nepalese hospitals were selected from a competitive pool of applicants: Pratigya Gyawali, Sumesh Khanal, Santosh Kumar Deo and Kedar Gautam. The goal of the BTF research grant project is to promote evidence-based medicine in the developing world. A recipient noted, "Being associated with BTF has been a great learning experience for me. As a recent research grant recipient of the foundation, I have been provided the opportunity that very few get so early in their career. The whole process of initiating and conducting research has widened my knowledge regarding evidence based medicine."

The conference established the basis for the development of common therapeutic strategies and clinical trials among Nepalese oncologists and members of the Binaytara Foundation (BTF), who will provide support in the development of a common treatment framework. Dr. Rajendra Baral, an oncologist from Kathmandu and the organizing secretary for the two-day conference, was awarded an honorary Binaytara Foundation membership.
