Breast Augmentation Surgeon in Scottsdale Releases New Research

Dr. Robert Cohen, well regarded for breast augmentation in the Scottsdale and Phoenix area, recently had a scholarly paper published on a 5-year study of ways to reduce the risk of capsular contracture, a common complication with breast implants.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ, December 04, 2013 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Robert Cohen (www.robertcohenmd.com) and other prestigious breast surgery specialists conducted a 5-year study that showed textured breast implants placed under patients' pectoral muscles help reduce the risk of capsular contracture, the most common complication after breast augmentation. The Scottsdale-area plastic surgeon says the research could change the risk of the complication for millions of patients.

The results of the large-scale study, published in the November issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery , the journal of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons , provide "compelling evidence that textured surface implants and sub muscular placement play significant roles in reducing the incidence of capsular contracture."

The researchers analyzed Sientra breast implants inserted by 34 plastic surgeons in 2,560 primary augmentation patients.

"Our study is one of the largest to look at multiple factors related to the development of capsular contracture," Dr. Cohen says. "Textured implants were found to be associated with a significantly lower risk for breast augmentation patients."

At his Phoenix-area practice, Dr. Cohen says, he primarily uses textured implants for his patients because of their demonstrated ability to protect against capsular contracture, among other benefits. Capsular contracture occurs when scar tissue forms around the implant, forming a capsule, and then contracts. It can make the implant feel hard and misshaped and, in severe cases, can be painful.

"There are multiple factors that need to be taken into account when selecting the best implants for each patient," Dr. Cohen says. "But this study adds to a growing body of evidence showing that textured implants placed partially beneath the muscle are a good choice for many patients."

Dr. Cohen also notes that complications following breast augmentation are rare overall, and breast augmentation remains one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures in the Phoenix-area.

"This research has real-life applications and helps to guide surgeons and patients in choosing the best possible implant," he says. "Further research of this nature will only help make breast augmentation better and safer for patients in the future."

Dr. Robert Cohen is a board-certified plastic surgeon (www.robertcohenmd.com) offering extensive options for plastic surgery procedures such as breast augmentation. Dr. Cohen received his medical degree from the Tulane University School of Medicine and trained in general and plastic surgery at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. Dr. Cohen also received advanced surgery training in the prestigious W. Grant Stevens aesthetic surgery fellowship. He has presented numerous plastic surgery research studies through peer-reviewed journals and professional societies and is certified by The American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is also a course instructor in complex breast surgery for the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
