Jackson Design & Remodeling Wins an Unprecedented Four National Contractor of the Year Awards

San Diego design-build firm nearly sweeps Kitchens category, winning 3 out of 4, also earns Best Bath Under $30k.

SAN DIEGO, CA, April 03, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- San Diego design and remodeling firm Jackson Design & Remodeling (JDR) had an unprecedented evening at Friday's National Association of the Remodeling Industry's (NARI) Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards. The annual national awards program honors the best remodeling projects in the nation. Winners of the CotY regional awards automatically advanced to the national finals.

Out of the four categories for best kitchen, JDR took home three of them, winning the national award for Kitchens $60k - $80k, Kitchens $80,001k - 120k and Kitchens over $120k. The company also won for Baths under $30k. The awards were judged by the National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI) and announced during the NARI Evening of Excellence held Friday, March 28 at the New Orleans Marriott. For the second time, the awards were webcast live on the NARI site. The presentation highlighted both Regional and National winners totaling 126 projects in 25 categories ranging from kitchens, baths, additions, exteriors, whole house and commercial remodels. The Webcast will be available for 30 days at www.nari.org/eveningofexcellence.

JDR designers, architects and project managers, around 25 total, gathered in the company's showroom to watch the live webcast. The company's first win came in the category Best Bathroom Under $30k, then it was time for the highly anticipated "Kitchens" category, the grand finale of the evening.

"The whole office gathered around the TV monitors in our showroom to watch the live webcast of the ceremony. When we won the first award we were ecstatic and we thought that was it. It's very rare to win a single national CotY, much less two of them," said Jackson. "When they got to the kitchens category and we won another one, we were over the moon. But then they moved on to another kitchen category, and we couldn't believe it when they called our name again. And then they got to the final category, Kitchens over $120,000 and they called us again. We were dumbfounded. No one could believe it. I'm just so proud of our entire team. Our incredible designers and architects, our project managers and every single person that makes it a privilege for me to come to work each day. We're celebrating our 25th year in business this year, so these wins are extra special. What a great way to start our 25th year in business!"

JDR's four national CotY awards came in the following categories:

Residential Kitchen $40,000 to $80,000: Retro Revival

For a client with an enthusiastic appreciation of retro design, the JDR team led by Senior Interior Designer Rosella Gonzalez, Member ASID; Assistant Designer Karina Delgadillo; and Architectural Designer Chris Ashby; selected bright, optimistic yellow to set the tone in the room, with retro-inspired appliances in buttery yellow chosen as key elements of the design. A generous apron-front farm sink gleams with clean white enameled cast iron and is outfitted with a rare retro faucet with spray and scrub brush attachments. Black trim against the yellow ceramic tile countertops defines the kitchen's lines. Simple maple cabinetry painted white with black ceramic knobs provides a modern level of storage. Playful positioning of contrasting tiles on the floor presents a modern, quirky interpretation of the traditional checkerboard pattern in this classic kitchen with an original point of view.

Residential Kitchen $80,001 to $120,000: Mid-Century Modern

This remodel of a kitchen in a La Jolla Farms home, designed in the 1960s by noted architect Dale Naegle, imaginatively blends the divergent tastes of a young couple with school age children. The design team, led by Tatiana Machado-Rosas, Senior Interior Designer, Member ASID; Alison Green, Interior Designer, Member ASID; and John Kavan, Architectural Designer, carefully selected materials, including white quartz countertops against dark bamboo cabinetry in a horizontal grain in order to present a clean, shining and streamlined impression. The stunning backsplash of Italian Calacatta marble blends perfectly with the countertops and wraps the kitchen in luxury. Sections of the marble were carefully selected to find the most dramatic veining effect above the cooktop. For lighting, a trio of pendant globes visually establishes the linear layout of the kitchen space. The elegant yet comfortable new dining area is furnished with a pair of vintage Barcelona lounge chairs and decorated with pieces from the clients' modern art collection. The home's original concrete floors were replaced with new poured concrete and finished with a gleaming surface treatment. The new design honors the home's rich past while creating a comfortable, modern space for a young family.

Residential Kitchen over $120,000: Modern Glamour

A professional couple with an appetite for glamorous entertaining wanted a more inviting kitchen to welcome large groups of friends and family. The design team, led by Sol Quintana Wagoner, Senior Interior Designer, Member ASID; Assistant Designer, Olga Trujillo; and Architectural Designer, Chris Ashby, selected a circular sparkling chandelier to hang from a metallic silver ceiling, immediately establishing a mood of excitement and glamour. The dining area, kitchen and bar are in an expansive living area defined by sweeping vaulted ceilings. An extra-large island delineates the kitchen area, punctuated by a striking designer hood. The room glitters with purple, silver and charcoal hues. At the far end of the kitchen, a seductively lit bar opens to the backyard where the clients frequently entertain poolside. Throughout the expansive area, careful attention to lighting, materials and space planning creates a sense of intimacy and welcoming warmth.

Residential Bath under $30,000: Glittering Drama

A couple that frequently entertained guests from their professional circle wanted a new powder room to make a memorable, dramatic impression. The design team, led by Sol Quintana Wagoner, Senior Interior Designer, Member ASID; Vanesa Tejara, Assistant Designer; and John Kavan, Architectural Designer, first constructed a wall to conceal the venting system, allowing for the addition of a free-standing vanity. An impressive wall of tile is the focal point of the bath with deep hues of ebony, gold and dark brown, illuminated by gold leaf lighting, which is activated by a sensor when entering the room. A curved mirror with a rustic Asian-themed wood frame is the backdrop for a stunning onyx sink with gold fixtures. The sink appears to glow with creamy luminescence atop the free-standing vanity with Shoji-style doors. The new powder room is bright, welcoming and conveys a glittering sense of drama, delighting guests as the showpiece of the home.

To be considered for a CotY Award, a company must be a NARI member in good standing. The entries of this year's competition totaled over $72 million worth of remodeling projects. An impartial panel of judges who are experts within the industry and associated fields, selected winners based on each entrant's "before and after" photography and project description. Judging was based on problem solving, functionality, aesthetics, craftsmanship, innovation, degree of difficulty and entry presentation.

NARI members represent an elite group of the approximately 800,000 companies and individuals in the U.S. identifying themselves as remodelers.

Homeowners are estimated to spend a total of $150 billion on home improvements in the U.S. through 2014, according to the Joint Center for Housing Studies.
