Respect the Parts That Keep Your Motor Running

The hoses are what keep the coolant flowing through the motor, which in itself is critical for normal operation. There are many belts under the hood as well, none of which is any less important than the other. The serpentine belts power the alternator, which in turn keeps the electrical system, the water pump, the A/C compressor and the power steering going.

For interference engines (those that do not protect the cylinders from harm in the event of catastrophic belt failure), a faulty timing belt could spell disaster to the tune of irreparable damage. Fortunately, belt and hose maintenance does not need to be performed as routinely as other engine upkeep like oil and air filter changes.

Both serpentine and V-belts should be replaced every three to four years or 50,000 miles. Consult your vehicle's owner manual regarding when to change the timing belt, but chances are it will fall between 60,000 and 90,000 miles.
