MEDIAPOLIS, IA, August 29, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mediapolis, a town in SE Iowa, named 145 years ago for being the middle (media) village (polis) on a railway line halfway between Wapello and Burlington is home to the Mike Abel family where they are putting up anything but "middle-of-the-road" solar system.
"This is a big one," says Moxie Solar's Jason Hall brushing dirt from his hands and looking down the line of over 600 feet of solar array. "Mike contacted me in late 2013 after seeing one of our installs on the December cover of Wallace's Farmer Magazine. Our design here, is very similar to one on the cover in that it's a custom Moxie Built ground mount system that stands close to 20 feet tall supported by a concrete and steel skeleton. Our goal for farmers is to take up the smallest footprint, while producing maximum power. A ground mount is easy to service, if needed, over the anticipated 25 - 35 year lifespan of the system. Installing it on the ground keeps the roof of hog building unobstructed making it easy to repair or replace."
"I really did my diligence in researching the prospects of solar. I got in contact with Dean Van Kooten, the owner of the system in Kellogg, IA, and he gave some sound direction on what to look for when considering solar, and solar providers," explains Mike Abel. "I then talked with a couple other farmers I knew who had solar and went and checked out their systems. Then Jason took me on a tour of Dean's Moxie Built array and the difference in quality and attention to detail were clear. I knew that was the system I wanted, I just needed to make certain the return on investment was going to make sense, which it did. These 3 arrays are equivalent to a 120 Kilowatt power plant and will power 3 hog finishing units where we raise over 10,000 hogs a year, and the solar will power the entire thing! It's truly a wonder, no exhaust, no smoke, or even moving parts, just quietly producing tons of electrical 'horsepower.'"
"This is a huge solar power plant to be privately owned. It's most certainly the largest family owned in Eastern Iowa and gives the Van Kooten's system, in Central Iowa, a run for its money. Size, design and bragging rights are all fun to kick about," says Hall, "but we all know the most important thing is maximizing return on investment for our customers, giving them peace of mind and confidence in the investment they've made."
