Dr. Pappas received his medical degree in 1989 from George Washington University. Dr. Pappas performed his surgical internship at Georgetown University and his ophthalmology residency at George Washington Hospital Center. Following his Residency, he pursued and completed his Clinical Fellowship training in Vitreoretinal diseases and surgery at the Retina Institute of Maryland in Baltimore. At the Retina Institute, according to his website, he "performed clinical research and participated in landmark clinical trials investigating both medical and surgical retinal treatments." The specialties his practice include are diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular hole, macular pucker as well as retinal tear and detachment. Dr. Pappas founded the Center for Retinal Diseases and Surgery, LLC in 2001 where he continued the retinal care established by his father almost 50 years prior.

Dr. Pappas presents his clinical research in local, regional and national conferences in ophthalmology and retinal diseases once yearly. He holds a teaching position at Georgetown University/Washington Hospital Center Ophthalmology Residency and Vitreoretinal Fellowship programs. He is a member of associations such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO), WMOS, NVOS and the ASEP&S.

Dr. Pappas participates actively in many local community outreach programs, especially those sponsored by the Prevention of Blindness Society of the Washington Metropolitan Area and other local organizations. Dr. Pappas has been recognized since 2004 as one of America's Top Ophthalmologists by the Consumers' Research Council of America and as one of Washington's Top Doctors by Washingtonian Magazine in both 2010 and 2012. In addition, Dr. Pappas served two consecutive terms as Chairman of Ophthalmology Surgery at Suburban Hospital in Maryland (from 1997 through 2003) and was elected President of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Ophthalmology Society where he served two years.
