Reform Canine Breeding and Auctions (RCBAA) Launches Focused, Funded, Strategic Effort to Stop Inhumane Dog Breeding Practices

Group Calls for Registration and Regulation of For-Profit Dog Breeders

"We're going to offer practical, workable solutions that make sense for the breeding industry and that protect the dogs."

FORT WORTH, TX, December 15, 2014 /24-7PressRelease/ -- When dog lovers hear about conditions at the worst puppy mills, they are justifiably outraged. Many also want to work together to help improve the lives of the dogs.

"As a dog lover, I would like to see those breeders who don't treat their animals humanely leave the breeding business if they can't reform," said Ron Sturgeon, a Fort Worth-based entrepreneur who started Reform Canine Breeding and Auctions (RCBAA) in November.

"Every dog raised by a for-profit breeder deserves to be treated with kindness and with humaneness. Every dog should be bred using only medically sound practices," said Sturgeon.

"To be successful in implementing change, we need to focus our efforts on doing what will improve the lives of the dogs the most," said Sturgeon. "We believe that registration of breeders and sensible regulation are the best first steps," he said.

Sturgeon admits that other groups have different approaches to improving dog breeding. Some want to work on sales-side reforms that restrict the places breeders can sell or to reform online sales of dogs. Still others want to restrict demand, a challenging goal in the world of easy Internet sales. Still others want to close large commercial breeders; still others want to focus on reforming the AKC or USDA regulations.

"We have chosen to approach the problem from the supply side and to look for ways to improve the practices of breeders, but not to eliminate breeders because there will always be demand for what they supply," said Sturgeon.

"We're going to offer practical, workable solutions that make sense for the breeding industry and that protect the dogs," said Sturgeon. "We know ours isn't the only approach to the problem, and we wish best of luck to those who decide to pursue other reform efforts," said Sturgeon.

"RCBAA has created a vision, mission and plan to accomplish its goals of registration and better regulation of for-profit dog breeders. RCBAA has attracted more than 500 registrants since it was formed two weeks ago, including ex-CEOs, CFOs, veterinarians, rescue group leaders, dog breeders, show dog owners and dog lovers. The group has chosen Entrepreneur Hue Grant as its first president. It is currently building its leadership team from the many resumes that have been submitted.

The group will have its first organizational, planning and board meeting in January in Dallas. Following that meeting, it will be finalizing its legal entity and nonprofit status, soliciting donations and others to help, and going to work on the business plan. RCBAA is seeking applicants to serve on its board and talented volunteers who are passionate about bettering the lives of dogs.
