MIAMI, FL, March 03, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Victor L. Perez, Professor of Ophthalmology of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, has been recognized for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in ophthalmology.
Dr. Perez has 22 years of professional experience, with eight years as a faculty member at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and presently is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Walter G. Ross Chair in Ophthalmic Research. Throughout his career, he has come to specialize in the treatment of, ocular immunology, uveitis, corneal and external diseases, corneal transplant surgery, ocular surface diseases, keratoprostheses, complex cataracts and intraocular lens implantation.
On a daily basis, he works to research ocular surface disease, stem cell therapy, dry eye syndrome and keratoprosthesis. He also completes practitioner duties involving the treatment patients of all ages that have ocular surface diseases, corneal diseases, cornea transplant, keratoprosthesis, ocular immunology and uveitis, cataracts and intraocular lens. Dr. Perez works as a professor of ophthalmology with a secondary appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Interdisciplinary Stem Cell Institute and Sylvester Cancer Center. He became involved in his profession because he was always interested in the eye and its function as "a window to the world."
Dr. Perez completed a research fellowship and immunology fellowship through the Department of Pathology at Brigham & Women's Hospital at Harvard Medical School and an Ocular Immunology Research Fellowship at the Schepens Eye Research Institute, at Harvard Medical School. He also completed his residency at Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School, followed with two clinical fellowship training in Cornea, External Diseases and Uveitis at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Perez earned an MD through the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, and he is a member of The American Academy of Ophthalmology. In the coming years, Dr. Perez's goal is to continue to translate basic science research into the clinical practice to provide novel therapies to patients with ocular surface diseases and corneal/stem cell transplantation.
