SAN DIEGO, CA, April 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In the desert, one thing is certain - sunshine is never hard to find. So when upscale Borrego Springs resort La Casa del Zorro sought a way to improve sustainability practices throughout its 42-acre property, leveraging the power of the sun was a natural choice. The hotel recently completed a two-month, $150,000 "solar farm" development, the first of two major projects to advance energy independence and more eco-friendly initiatives for the iconic hideaway.
The 10,000-square foot project, completed by San Diego-based Everyday Energy, consists of panels that heat five of La Casa del Zorro's largest guest pools, naturally maintaining a temperature between 80 and 90 degrees at all times. In addition, it fuels hot water for four of the resort's five main lodging buildings, with the fifth and final soon to come. Combined with results from a 2013 water conservation project, which saves over 600,000 gallons of water each month through dormant well reactivation and evaporation reduction, La Casa del Zorro is well on its way to realizing optimum energy autonomy while decreasing its environmental impact.
"We have always held the ultimate goal of La Casa del Zorro becoming self-sufficient in our utility consumption," said General Manager Patrick Sampson. "This development allows us to better and more efficiently serve our guests and conserve funds and resources - all while conserving the planet's resources as well."
But the plans don't stop there - next on the water-conscious to-do list is transitioning heat sources for the kitchen and laundry appliances to run on the solar farm's grid. Ownership has also earmarked $3 million for a photovoltaic system, which will transform solar power into clean, renewable energy across the property.
