Breast Implant Revision Surgery up 30% in 2014

    SCOTTSDALE, AZ, April 15, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The numbers are out for the top surgical procedures performed nationally by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, or ASAPS members for 2014.

Breast augmentation continues to be one of the leading cosmetic surgical procedures performed in the United States, with close to 300,000 being done in 2014. This is a 35% increase since 2000, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

However, with breast augmentation surgery now reaching close to its 50th birthday, more and more women are looking for revision or replacement of their breast implants placed decades ago.

Dr. John Corey, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon in Arizona and President of the Arizona Society of Plastic Surgeons explains the 30% rise in breast implant revision seen nationally, as reported by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

"There are so many factors that can change over the years from shape to size and feel, and with which weight changes can affect as well... and with Scottsdale being such a melting pot of a population center, I personally am seeing 10 times the national average of breast implant revisions being done, just in my practice alone," Dr. Corey says.

Dr. Corey goes on to explain that newer technologies are now available as well to help women achieve a breast implant revision that they may have needed now for many years.

Reasons for breast revision surgeries may include contracture of the pocket or capsule that holds the implant, deflation or rupture of the implant, wanting either a larger or smaller implant or removal of implants all together.

Breast revision cases tend to be some of the more difficult cases as well. First, there is the presence of scar tissue that may be several decades old and work may need to be done to the pocket or capsule, to remove old capsules or revise existing ones. Second, the patient often presents with no record or information from surgery done 20 years ago, and third, patient's native breast tissue may have changed over the years as well.

It is important to communicate your desires and discuss realistic expectations with your surgeon. As always, do your research and make sure you seek counsel from a board certified plastic surgeon who has many years of experience with breast revision cases.
