MINNEAPOLIS, MN, October 07, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Vertebral Technologies, Inc. (VTI), a differentiated spinal solutions company, announces the approval and first implantation in Taiwan of its modular InterFuse S interbody device. The surgery is the first in the commercial launch in Taiwan of the expandable, modular- interbody fusion device designed to alleviate painful spine conditions through a minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
Surgeons are able to optimize conditions for successful lumbar fusion using VTI's intra-operative assembly technology and the large, biomechanically stable footprint it facilitates. VTI's products allow surgeons to implant a large surface area device through a smaller access channel than with currently available fusion products.
Dr. Chen Yue-Quen of the Armed Forces TaoYuan General Hospital (AFTYHG) recently implanted the first InterFuse modular device in a patient who had fusion surgery two years earlier but whose condition had not improved. Dr. Chen is reporting that the patient is now doing much better and is pain free following revision with the InterFuse S device.
Dr. Chen saw the InterFuse product for the first time at the 2012 ISASS meeting in Barcelona and at that time became interested in using the InterFuse device with his patients. The device is implanted one module at a time, through a small access channel. Once the device is completed, typically using 4-5 modules per patient, weight is distributed over a larger surface area, resulting in less likelihood of subsidence. The assembled size and anatomic fit of the device also reduce the chance for device migration.
"We are excited about our technology being available to surgeons in an additional non-US market. The first use of a device in a new market is a significant and exciting event. We congratulate both the surgical team and our distribution partners, Chen Lien Scientific, on their success. We look forward to working with Chen Lien Scientific to ensure Taiwanese surgeons have access to our technology and its benefits", said Matt Kyle, CEO, VTI. "VTI products are currently cleared for use in 38 countries with active surgeon users world-wide. We are committed to growth in markets outside of the US as a component of our commercialization strategy."
