NEW HAVEN, CT, November 17, 2015 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) announced today that it has two winning Connecticut state finalist entries in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest, a nationwide competition to increase interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) by challenging teachers and students to take topics out of traditional classroom settings and into local communities.
"I'm extremely proud of the students, teachers and the technology department for the work they are doing," said Principal Medria Blue-Ellis. "They are exhibiting what quality STEM education is all about."
ESUMS has again been named a Connecticut State Finalist and will continue in the Samsung competition. "What makes this year even more exciting is that we have two winning entries moving on to the second phase of the challenge," said Mobile Apps instructor, Melissa Manzione. The first entry employs STEM to address the use of technology to give New Haven's disabled population easier access to public transportation. The second entry also uses STEM to address the use of technology to help New Haven teens connect with area businesses for volunteer opportunities. ESUMS is one of three other schools in Connecticut to become a state finalist in the Solve for Tomorrow contest. During the next phase of the competition, Melissa Manzione and Leon Tynes, technology teachers at ESUMS, will create activity plans to address these issues in an educational setting. Lending assistance in the process will be Jeremiah Davila and Brian MacWilliam, science teachers at ESUMS. Fifty one state winners will be announced in early December.
This is ESUMS's second time as a state finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow contest. The school will receive four Samsung Galaxy Tabs and the opportunity to win additional prizes. To learn more about the competition and past winners, please visit www.samsung.com/solve.
