SKILLMAN, NJ, January 23, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marie Voorhees, Owner/Operator of Hidden Spring Lavender, has been recognized as a Distinguished Professional in her field through Women of Distinction Magazine. Marie Voorhees will be featured in the upcoming edition of the Women of Distinction Magazine in 2016.
After her 36-year corporate position was eliminated, Marie Voorhees decided to turn what was at the time just a side business into a full-time venture. Planting just 1,000 plugs of lavender in the front of her farm in the spring of 2013, they flourished, and by the end of summer she had people stopping by her front door to purchase fresh lavender. The following spring she planted another 1,000 plugs and she began renovating her cow barn into a Lavender Gift Shoppe. Now, with more than 4,000 lavender plants and over 150 items of lavender products made by Mrs. Voorhees herself, she is now able to dedicate all of her time to her new found business.
"My husband and mother have inspired and encouraged me through their positive motivation in my business," Mrs. Voorhees said. "They are very supportive and believe in what I am doing. It's also very gratifying when customers love visiting the Shoppe. I am dedicated to the work I do and the farm we live on and it has been a dream to own a farm for most of my life. I feel very fortunate and blessed to be living my dream."
Running the business by herself as Owner/Operator, Mrs. Voorhees cares for each of her lavender plants by harvesting thousands of them each year, drying them, and creating all of the products she now sells to customers. She also gives farm tours to many garden clubs around New Jersey, explaining the growing process, the types of lavender she grows, and what they are used for. Dedicating long hours to the business, her commitment has been worthwhile and she is glad to have pursued her passion.
Beginning her career at the age of 17 at RCA Corporation in Princeton, New Jersey, while still in high school, RCA took Mrs. Voorhees on full-time after graduation. Working her way up in the organization, she spent time as a mail room clerk, purchasing clerk, administrative assistant, buyer, and senior manager.
Currently, Mrs. Voorhees is active by supporting Carrier Clinic, a hospital for the mentally challenged. She has hosted several health fairs for them, as well as vendor days. Lavender products happen to be very therapeutic to not only the staff that works there but the individuals cared for. She also gives lectures at local rotary clubs, church groups, and senior centers.
