Dr. Smith has 33 years of professional experience, with years as a manager of quality, safety and risk; most recently for St. John of God, Mt. Lawley Hospital. Throughout her career, she has set herself apart through her skill in critical care nursing, intensive care nursing, cardio-thoracic nursing, health law and ethics, as well as clinical governance, patient safety and healthcare risk management. Dr. Smith spent six years in academia and 20 years in nursing. She was in the Royal Australian Air Force as logistics clerk for 10 years, and the last four years she worked full-time, while working toward her nursing degree part-time. She advises young professionals entering their career to know that there aren't any dumb questions; the only dumb question is the one you don't ask. Dr. Smith feels very happy to be blessed with a high level of personal and professional integrity. Looking back to the start of her career, Dr. Smith attributes her success to her tenacity and persistence. She became involved in the academic part of her profession after working as a clinician for a long time. She wanted the opportunity to see how to better develop upcoming nursing students, and improve the quality of care that they provide. The highlight of her career was completing her doctorate while working full-time, when her husband was absent through his work commitments and she had a very small child to raise. It taught her that she can achieve anything in life and structure is the key to managing time. It also taught her the value of quality time with her family.
Dr. Smith received a Doctorate in Business Administration from Southern Cross University in 2008, a Graduate Diploma in Psychology from Charles Sturt University in 2001, a Graduate Certificate in Intensive Care Nursing from the NSW College of Nursing in 1996, a Graduate Certificate in Cardio-Thoracic Nursing from the University of Western Sydney in 1995, and a Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Western Sydney, where she graduated with honors in 1994.
