With PST, patients can alleviate these symptoms with less pain and a shorter recovery than standard techniques.
CALGARY, AB, March 30, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Southcentre Dental Clinic announced Thursday that patients suffering from gum recession now have an alternative to painful gum grafting. Dr. Steven Cload is one of only four dentists in all of Calgary to achieve certification in the Pinhole Surgery Technique (PST).
"The Pinhole Surgery Technique is an exciting innovation in gum recession treatment," Dr. Cload said. "Gum recession can lead to tooth sensitivity and increases the risk of cavities and gum disease. With PST, patients can alleviate these symptoms with less pain and a shorter recovery than standard techniques."
Rather than removing soft tissue from the roof of the mouth or a donor and grafting it to the receded portion of the gum line, PST involves stretching and reshaping the patient's existing gum tissue to cover exposed tooth roots. During the procedure, the dentist makes a small pinhole in the gum. Using special tools, periodontal tissue is then repositioned to cover the areas of recession. Finally, collagen strips are inserted to stabilize the new position of the gums.
Traditional gum grafting is often a painful process requiring incisions and sutures. No incisions or sutures are necessary with PST, and the procedure involves significantly less pain in most cases.
Gum recession can be caused by tooth grinding, aging, aggressive teeth brushing and periodontal disease. In addition to discomfort and loss of protection for tooth roots, the receded tissue can also have a cosmetic impact by making teeth look overly long.
Dr. Cload is part of a small group of dentists in Canada certified to perform the Pinhole Surgical Technique. Fewer than 40 dentists in the country have completed the requisite training.
