Wailes, Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic has been named a Worldwide Branding Professional of the Year in Symphony Conducting. While inclusion in Worldwide Branding is an honor, only a few members in each discipline are chosen for this distinction. These special honorees are distinguished based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, leadership abilities, years of service, and the credentials they have provided in association with their Worldwide Branding membership.
Mr. Wailes has 21 years of professional experience, with 16 years as music director and chief conductor of Royal Melbourne Philharmonic. Throughout his career, he has set himself apart through his expertise in singing, conducting, directing, teaching and lecturing about music. He is also known for his extensive symphonic choral repertoire.
Mr. Wailes is well-known throughout Australia as a conductor, choral director, chorus master, lecturer and singer. He is also the artistic director of The Australian Children's Choir, conductor of the Melbourne University Choral Society, and over the last 20 years has directed all of the major faculty choirs at all of the state's universities, including Monash University, The University of Melbourne and Melba Conservatorium. He also conducted at Australian Catholic University, where he lectured in conducting and choral studies.
Mr. Wailes has been the principal conductor of the Melbourne University Choral Society since 1992, and artistic director and music director of The Australian Children's Choir since 1999. In addition, he has been the music director of the Box Hill Chorale since 1995. For more than 10 years, he was the director of the Australian Catholic University's Melbourne Choir, and in 2010, he accepted an invitation to become a 'Visiting Guest Maestro' at Spain's "Escuela de Direccion de Orquesta y Banda."
Mr. Wailes has conducted an impressive number of major works, across a wide range of repertoire styles, including many Australian and world premieres. He has also directed choirs for many major televised events, including six AFL Grand Finals, the opening of Stadium Australia in Sydney, the opening of Federation Square in Melbourne, two Australian Film Industry Awards concerts, five International Comedy Festival Gala Concerts, the opening ceremony of the Parliament of the World's Religions, the President's Cup Gala, and at the Closing Ceremony of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. Other events he has conducted choirs at include the Prime Minister's Olympic Gala, the Anzac Day Dawn Service at the Shrine of Remembrance, and the Melbourne Awards.
Looking back, Mr. Wailes attributes his success to his hard work and passion. He became involved in his profession because he has always had a passion for music. He has studied conducting with leading international choral specialists, including Simon Halsey, John Rutter, Jo-Michael Sheibe, Rod Eichenberger, and Stefan Parkman.
Mr. Wailes received a Bachelor of Arts in applied music, with a focus in orchestral and choral conducting, from Monash University, and he has also completed college coursework in political science and law. He maintains affiliation with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra, the Melbourne University Choral Society, the Australian Catholic University, the Australian Intervarsity Choral Societies Association, Opera Australia, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and the Victorian Arts Centre. Mr. Wailes was the inaugural winner of the Australasian International Choral Conducting Competition in Brisbane. In years to come, Mr. Wailes aims to continue to teach, tour, and compose.
