Silicone Implants Don't Raise Risk for Breast Cancer

    /24-7PressRelease/ - ORANGE COUNTY, CA, March 01, 2008 - The longest, most extensive follow-up study that closely examined the supposed risks of silicone and breast cancer concluded that these implants do not raise your chances of getting breast cancer.

There was even some evidence that silicone breast implants may be linked to decreased breast cancer risk. This study was conducted at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, and printed in the April 19, 2006 issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. It followed 3,486 women who had cosmetic breast implantation for the first time between 1965 to 1993. The study has garnered plenty of media attention and is considered to be a clear, credible report by many, due to the longevity of the study and the accuracy of the information registry and data reporting systems used.

Women who are considering having breast augmentation should not be concerned - there is no scientific basis for the alleged link between silicone breast implants and breast cancer.

Silicone gel implants approved by FDA
For a period of 14 years, silicone breast implants were a focus of media controversy in the U.S. Because of media outcry which was based on false claims of disease caused by leaking silicone implants, the FDA restricted their use to breast reconstruction, rather than cosmetic enhancement. That left saline implants as the only cosmetic choice between 1982 and 1996.

During those 14 years, several companies did huge amounts of research on silicone gel in breast implants. In November, 2006, the FDA approved a new variety of implant made of a silicone gel which cannot leak even if the implant shell is punctured (which is extremely unlikely in any case). It's called Cohesive Gel or MemoryGel , and has a thicker consistency, so that it sticks to itself and doesn't run. People liken it to gummy bears.

We should remember too, that silicone is made from silicon, which is the second most common element on Earth, after oxygen. It's found in sand, rocks, quartz, crystals, and many other natural items, and is used widely in processed foods, hand lotion, hairspray, chewing gum, and hundreds of other regularly-used products. So our bodies are well-accustomed to silicone, and the previous claims that it causes cancer and autoimmune disease have been proved false.

Some factors that could contribute to breast cancer
