He then completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in 1990.

Dr. Parra was named one of 5280 Magazine's Best of the Best Doctors in All Specialties in the state of Colorado in 2001, 2005 and 2006 for the specialties of Hematology or Oncology or both specialties simultaneously. In 2008, he was named the National Congressional Committee's Physician of the Year by the United States Congress. He completed board certification through his affiliation with the American Board of Medical Oncology in 1991 and the American Board of Internal Medicine in 1988. In May of 2016, he was named Top Doctor in Hematology and Oncology by Top Doctor Awards, specializing in recognizing and commemorating the achievements of today's most influential and respected Doctors in Medicine. In addition to his work with Rocky Mountain Health Benefits for patient safety and physician quality programs in the country, Dr. Parra does public speaking, including the Affordable Care Act and the health effects of oil and natural gas production locally and has served as contributing editor in several publications and texts, including Occupational, Industrial and Environmental Toxicology.
