WANO formed in response to a need, but to succeed it needed to stay true to its founding mission despite myriad cultural and political differences." - Dr. Philip L. Cantelon, book author.
ROCKVILLE, MD, November 09, 2016 /24-7PressRelease/ -- History Associates, the leading U.S. historical research firm, has written the history of the World Association of Nuclear Power Operators (WANO). The book, Nuclear Safety Has No Borders, begins in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster when commercial nuclear power operators across the globe realized they needed to do more as a group to prevent these devastating events. They came together to create a non-profit organization whose sole mission is to improve the industry's operational safety and performance. Over the next 25 years, WANO has grown to represent more than 130 members operating more than 430 commercial power plants worldwide.
"WANO's remarkable story holds compelling lessons for all global industries that must manage risk," said Dr. Philip L. Cantelon, author of the book and CEO of History Associates. "WANO formed in response to a need, but to succeed it needed to stay true to its founding mission despite myriad cultural and political differences. This commitment enabled it to successfully evolve, so it continues to further a culture of excellence and safety in the global commercial nuclear power industry."
WANO selected History Associates to write the book due to the company's particular expertise in nuclear history. Dr. Cantelon is a noted scholar of nuclear energy, having written the history of the Three Mile Island incident for the Department of Energy; edited The American Atom, widely used as a college textbook on nuclear history; and co-authored the history of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO).
Dr. Cantelon conducted oral history interviews with twenty-seven people who were key figures in WANO's history, supplemented with research within the organization's archives, to develop the story and put WANO's history within the broader context of the international nuclear power industry.
The book is written for an informed lay audience and features notes, illustrations, photographs, bibliography, and index. The book may be read online at http://www.wano.info/Documents/WANO-BOOK-FINAL-lowres.pdf.
