SHERIDAN, OR, May 19, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On Saturday, April 22nd, the Delphian School's jazz choir took home second place at the 41st annual Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival located at the Pleasant Hill High School. The festival included workshops for the musicians and vocalists, an opportunity to listen to choirs from other schools, and a performance by On the Rocks, a local professional a capella group. This annual competition is aimed at middle and high school instrumental and vocal performers, and competing schools are welcomed to participate on an invitational basis.
First held in 1976, the Pleasant Hill Jazz Festival began as a simple vocal festival for listening to and competing with fellow local choirs. Over time, workshops and clinics were added for the competing vocalists, such as sessions on jazz improvisation with Gerry Rempel. In the last few years, the festival also added an instrumental workshop for the jazz choir's instrumentalists. Food carts were also added for performers, directors, and attendees, including Vinnie's BBQ and Lani Moku Grill.
Now more than forty years old, the festival has matured into a wonderful yearly event for visitors and residents of Pleasant Hill. The festival provides an excellent opportunity for middle and high school jazz choirs to perform, build their skills, and learn from other musicians. The Delphian School is proud to participate and looks forward to attending each year.
