ST. LOUIS, MO, September 07, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Katie's Pizza and Pasta Osteria in Town and Country is proud to announce their upcoming Giveback Tuesday event, which will benefit The Oasis Institute. The event is slated for Tues., September 26.
Every month, Katie's Pizza and Pasta Osteria features a local nonprofit charity and donates 100 percent of the earned proceeds from the entire day to the charity. Lunch, dinner, drinks, and carryout are all included. So far, Katie's Pizza and Pasta Osteria has donated more than $120,000 to local nonprofit organizations.
Funds raised from this Giveback Tuesday event will help support the organization's Intergenerational Tutoring Program, which is the largest tutoring program in the nation. The funds will help purchase books, create more session plans, and initiate recruitment efforts for new tutors.
"We have 1,997 tutors in St. Louis in 213 schools in 23 school districts," said Greg Lukeman, National Development Director at The Oasis Institute. "For some students, their tutor is the only consistent adult role model in their lives."
Founded by Marylen Mann and a group of educators and volunteers in 1982, Oasis combines mentoring with literacy interventions. Their tutors work with academically at-risk K-3 grade students who are not reading at their grade level.
In St. Louis alone, The Oasis Institute's tutors have reached 4,307 students who are academically at-risk.
"Before third grade, students are learning to read, and after third grade, they read to learn," Lukeman continued. "If there isn't an intervention by third grade, the students will continue to struggle and will more than likely never catch up academically with their peers. There is a higher chance that they will also drop out of school."
In November 2012, The Oasis Institute was named to the Social Impact 100 Index, a list of the top 100 nonprofit organizations that have broad social impact in the United States. The organization has also received recognition from the Surgeon General, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Council on Aging.
Additionally, The Oasis Institute partnered with Generation to Generation, powered by Encore.org through Next Avenue/PBS.org in November 2016 in order to mobilize older adults to help children thrive. The campaign aims to engage one million people ages 50 and over to stand up and show up for kids.
Katie's Pizza and Pasta Osteria is open every day at 11 a.m. and features Happy Hour specials from 3 to 5 p.m. and 9 to 10 p.m. Carry-outs are also available.
