BOSTON, MA, November 01, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On October 6-7, 2017 the GENiE Group (Global Educators Network for Health Innovation Education) held its annual conference, entitled "Educating the Global Health Care Innovator" in Boston. Well over 100 presenters and participants, included leading lights in health care and thought leaders in related educational fields, converged on Harvard Business School from across North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa.
The GENiE conference featured panel presentations on innovation education curricula tailored for health care stakeholder groups: providers, payors, those working in the life sciences, as well as investors and policymakers. Other panels were convened to examine the innovative content and delivery of health innovation education as well as "intrapreneurship," or innovation from within an organization.
Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker delivered a keynote dinner address on the current state of health care, with special emphasis on the opioid crisis affecting so much of the United States.
The GENiE conference puts forward a set of predictions for the coming year and evaluates the accuracy of the previous year's prognostications. Among the 2017 forecasts:
- Innovation in life sciences and technology is very likely because it is well funded and amply taught;
- Customer-centric innovation will be key to outcomes improvement;
- Innovation is significantly slowed by health care finance and payors; and
- Regulatory reform, while strongly needed, is unlikely to happen.
There were also a number of thought-provoking statements from the participants:
"From a venture capital perspective, incubators and accelerators have largely failed. A more likely path to success is corporate-backed or independent ventures." - A noted health care venture capitalist
"10% of commercial payments will be bundled by 2018." - Thomas Hawes, MD, MBA - Managing Director of Healthcare, Sandbox Industries; BlueCross BlueShield Venture Partners
"Good management drives good care." - Raffaella Sadun, PhD, M.Sc. - Professor, Strategy Unit, Harvard Business School
"We're going to start seeing payors realizing the value of digital treatments like health & wellness." - Tal Gilbert, MPhil, CEO Vitality USA
"Regi Herzlinger's MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) Innovating in Health Care is an example for the industry, because it's among our very popular business courses with more than 50,000 registrants. We should strive to design all our teaching to be more openly available and connect learners to each other." - Heather Sternshein, PhD, Manager of Instructional Development, HarvardX, Harvard's strategic initiative for online learning
