That is the question Borcz+Dixon, an advertising agency in Millersville, Maryland, is asking new hire candidates via its new B+D Digital Marketing University.
Instead of focusing solely on candidates with previous experience, Borcz+Dixon is looking for candidates that are intellectually curious, creative thinkers, exceptional writers and those that have the ability to extract meaning from data.

"There is a real undersupply of digital marketing talent across the DMV," Matthew Kilmurry continued. "Borcz+Dixon created the B+D Digital Marketing University, which is surprisingly unique among advertising agencies, in response to the marketplace. Academic marketing programs have not kept up with the shift to digital. And those marketers who do have previous digital experience often learned on their own without any direction."
The B+D Digital Marketing University process starts with select new-hire applicants completing a digital marketing quiz created by Borcz+Dixon to assess their aptitudes. New hires who pass the quiz and interview process will then enter into one of two tracts– Paid Media or Earned Media. Over the course of one year, new hires will learn all aspects of one tract, through hands-on experience, to become one of the best in the industry. They will also be required to pass all relevant certifications in the first year from brands such as Google and Facebook.
Borcz+Dixon's Paid Media tract includes training in Google AdWords, Facebook Ad Manager and a proprietary online banner ad platform. The Earned Media tract includes guidance on creating experiential content for sharing on social media and posting to websites and blogs for search engine optimization.
